I'm looking to upgrade my PS3 to a larger hard drive. Now, I've already found a 250 GB drive (though I might splurge and get the 500 GB instead) that will work at a reasonable price that I can afford and I know how to switch the drives out, but I wasn't sure about something. Can my current PSN account be carried over or do I need to make a new one? If the latter (which isn't really much of an issue since my PSN name is all-too-familiar and people can easily track me down despite my best efforts to remain unknown), I assume that to mean all of my trophies will have to be reacquired and all my purchased DLs (avatars, themes, games, etc.) will have to be bought again?

Now keep in mind I intend to upgrade after my free PS+ runs out.

Okay, here is what will happen.

You will NOT lose your trophies, DLC, or anything that has to do with stuff purchased from PSN.

What you will lose is your game saves, updates, and game data. Nothing else.

All you will have to do after you install the upgraded HDD is just sign back on with your original account. Everything that is purchased, or synced is stored on Sony's servers. (DLC, trophies, your online account).

You will also lose your system settings, if any were changed as well.

If transferred to a USB drive, can my game data be stored on a PC while I change the hard drive, then transferred back to my PS3 with the new hard drive via the USB drive?

I do believe so, yes.

Okay, good. Turns out this upgrade may have to wait, though. I just pre-ordered Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Battlefield 3, and WWE '12 (the sequel to WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011). http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-bounce018.gif

I'll fix this later when I get on an actual PC.

I'll merge your posts. smile.gif

I totally forgot about BF3.

There will be four games I want in November.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, MW3, BF3, and the HD remasters of MGS.

I'm going to need to do this as well. Let me know how it turns out when you get it done Xander. I think I'll probably get BF3 as well. One of the only FPS series I like. And Assassin's Creed will own my life when it comes out.

I will. It looks like it'll take me a few months to get it done, though. The hard drive is cheap enough on Amazon (at the moment), but I'm a few bucks short and can't get it until next month or unless I suddenly fall into some money (the latter not being likely to happen). Then I need to get a high-capacity USB drive (because I want to salvage my WWE SvR 2011, MGS4, and RE5 game saves at the least), of which a 32 GB model is going to run me about $60 unless I find one cheaper somewhere.

Hey Xander, have you considered an external harddrive? I'm not sure if it would work in place of a USB to put your saves on it, but it might be worth looking into. Could be cheaper. Not sure though.

I've actually been thinking about that. I do have an old desktop computer in storage that, AFAIK, still works.

Well, just ordered the hard drive. Splurged and got the 320 GB model instead of 250, though. All that remains is to (hopefully) get a good sized USB drive next month.
